I am interested in purchasing your 10X6 chicken house plans as I have 14 red sex links that are about a week old. What do you think would be an estimate for the cost to build this? Also, do you think this coop will provide adequate ventilation and cold winter protection? We live in Indiana. Thanks so much!!

Hi Aly,
I think this coop would be perfect for your needs. It's always hard to estimate costs because they vary based on location in the country. But, I can give you the shopping list (so to speak) and you can take it to you local lumber yard or home depot and see what it costs for the parts and pieces. Let us know what you learn!
You will need the following materials to build this coop:
[*](4) 4x4’s in 8’ length or greater – pressure treated for longevity and durability
[*](70) – Standard 2x4’s in 8’ lengths
[*](4) – Standard 2x4’s in 10’ lengths
[*](2) – Standard 2x4’s in 12’ lengths
[*](17) – 4’x8’ sheets of approximately ½” plywood or OSB
o Plywood or OSB will both work just fine. We recommend approximately 1/2” thickness. OSB has a lot of texture, if you plan on painting the exterior of your coop we would highly recommend using plywood, not OSB. If you plan on covering the exterior with stucco, siding or some other material then OSB will work well. (4 bundles) – shingles – typically 4 bundles of shingles will cover 133 sq. ft. which will be just about right, you will need about 120 sq. ft. for the roof and the top of the nest boxes
[*](1 roll) – roofing felt (you only need about 120 sq. ft.)
[*](60) – 1x2 furring strips (if you want the ‘board and batton’ finish on the exterior)
[*](4) – Hex Block 4 or Pier w/hot dip galvanized bracket (These are approximately 1’x1’x1’ blocks that form the foundation to set your 4 posts on. With the Hex Block, the posts rest in a 4”x4” square hole in the block. With the Pier w/bracket style, the block has a bracket that has two holes so you can drill a hole through the center of your posts and attach the posts to the bracket with a bolt)
[*](6) – 1” diameter x 4’ long wooden dowels
[*](2) – 2x2’s in 8’ lengths
[*](1) – oil rubbed bronze sash lock (twist lock)
[*](3) – black tee hinge 3.5”
[*](6) – oil rubbed bronze hinge 3”
[*](4) – 4”x12’ aluminum fascia, brown (optional)
[*](4) – 12”x12’ vented soffit, aluminum, brown (optional)
[*](4) – 1½”x12’ drip edge brown aluminum
[*](2) – 16”x6” (or 16”x8”) face on vent, brown
[*](3) – 2’x2’ windows
[*](8) – H1 hurricane ties (to attach the roof trusses)
[*](1 roll) – 3’x15’ hardware cloth net, black PVC (window screen)
[*]16d 3¼” nails for framing 8d ring shank nails 2½”
[*]Roofing nails for the shingles
[*]Trim nails (if you want the ‘board and batton’ finish on the exterior)
[*]2” wood screws (you will only be using 12 of these)
